Actor Alex Brightman will return to the title role of Broadway’s “Beetlejuice” as the musical enters its closing weekend. As previously reported, Brightman sustained a concussion during the Dec. 24 performance and has been on rest per doctor’s orders.
Brightman, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance, announced via Instagram that he will be in the show for the Jan. 6 performance, the Jan. 7 evening performance and the final performance on the evening of Jan. 8. He will not play the Jan. 7 and 8 matinées.
“Safety is my number one concern,” he wrote. “We did the proper steps to get me to this evening. Building back stamina, double (and triple) checking light and sound sensitivity, and finally have a 4.5 hour rehearsal yesterday to see what was truly possible.”
He continued, “All things, so far, have been a success (sucks-yes) and I will continue to take it day to day, performance by performance.”
Per Brightman’s post, understudy Andrew Kober plans to step in for the weekend matinée performances. Will Blum, who had been covering the role last week as well as this past Tuesday evening, reported via Instagram that he is out with a vocal injury.
“Beetlejuice” is produced on Broadway by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Langley Park Productions.
