Composer Alan Menken is working on a stage adaptation of “Hercules” for licensing purposes, Disney Theatrical confirmed Monday.
During his appearance on Rosie O’Donnell’s live-streamed fundraiser for the Actors Fund Sunday night, Menken said he was working on the musical, which he said was “coming to the stage,” prompting speculation on next steps for the project. If the project is made available for licensing, it could be performed by theaters across the country, rather than appearing on a Broadway or West End stage.
A stage adaptation of the Disney film premiered at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park last summer, as part of the Public Theater’s Public Works’ series, which features members of the community alongside professional actors.
On Sunday, Menken said he was also working on “Disenchanted,” the sequel to the animated film “Enchanted,” and on “another Broadway show,” which he declined to name.
