Social media: a daunting, ever-changing beast. Whether you’re a content creator or casual scroller, social media is one of the most prominent messaging tools in the zeitgeist and a very useful one for bringing your art to audiences. When the day of your show’s first announcement comes around, be prepared with what you need to hard-launch your social media pages. Here are six easy steps:

1.Decide which platforms to focus on

First, get familiar with the differences between each channel and figure out what excites you as a creator. Think about how strategy, creation, publication and user engagement differs between platforms. Meta apps allow cross posting; you can automatically post to Facebook and/or Threads, if you select the option on Instagram.
Tip: According to Statista, as of 2023, Facebook audiences tend to skew older with more than 50 percent of the users over the age of 40. Instagram prioritizes visual features like static photos and videos. New platforms, like Threads, are always changing and building the future of the internet.

2.Acquire a handle

Your handle (or the characters that come after the @) will be seen the most often and help people search for your brand. Decide on the most identifiable words or abbreviations to include in your social media handle. You want to choose a handle that gives people all of the information they need to decide this is the right page for them. For show pages, we often choose to include “play,” “musical” or “bway” in the handle if it needs more description.
