‘Phantom of the Opera’ earns a record $3 million as box office surges

For the first time in its 35-year history, "The Phantom of the Opera" broke the $3 million mark at the box office. The musical earned $3,029,826 through eight performances, up 11% from the previous week, while playing to standing-room-only crowds.

For the first time in its 35-year history, “The Phantom of the Opera” broke the $3 million mark at the box office. The musical earned $3,029,826 through eight performances, up 11% from the previous week, while playing to standing-room-only crowds.

For the week ending March 19, the 29 productions running grossed $34,124,422, an increase of 19% from the previous week. Overall capacity was at 95%, up 3%.

In addition to “Phantom,” the other highest-grossing shows were “The Lion King” and “Hamilton.” Nineteen productions played to 95% capacity or greater, while two played to less than 75%.

The Jonas Brothers played a five-performance concert engagement at the Marquis Theatre, which boosted the overall box office by bringing in $1,556,128. The show played to sold-out crowds at 100% capacity.

“The Lion King” saw a 38% increase at the box office last week. The musical grossed $2,252,399 and played to 100% capacity. The production was one of a handful that saw significant increases, including “Aladdin” (up 27%), “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (up 35%), “Some Like It Hot” (up 26%) and “Wicked” (up 21%).

“Funny Girl,” without star Lea Michele last week, saw a 32% box-office decrease. The revival grossed $1,264,772 and played to 85% capacity, down 11%.

“Life of Pi,” “Shucked,” “Camelot,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Bad Cinderella” remained in previews. “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” began previews on March 17. “Parade” opened on March 16 and “Bob Fosse’s ‘Dancin’” opened on March 19.
