The 2023 iteration of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ annual “Broadway Backwards” event raised $765,069 setting a new record. The total tops the previous $758,582, which was set in 2022.
Proceeds from the one-night-only concert, which took place March 13 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, benefit Broadway Cares and New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.
Since the event’s inception in 2006, “Broadway Backwards” has raised more than $7 million for Broadway Cares and The Center.
Jenn Colella hosted the 17th edition of the event, which featured 67 performers and a 13-piece orchestra. “Broadway Backwards” was directed by its creator, Robert Bartley.
The annual “Broadway Backwards” celebrates the LGBTQ+ community by interpreting classic and current musical theater songs into anthems of LGBTQ+ experiences. This year’s performance was sponsored by City National Bank, The New York Times, United Airlines and Ted Snowdon.
