In the final weeks of Broadway’s “Between Riverside and Crazy,” Gary Perez has stepped into the cast as Lieutenant Caro; he began on Jan. 20. Perez replaced Michael Rispoli, who exited the production due to a scheduling conflict.

The Second Stage production marks Perez’s Broadway debut. He is one of the founders of LAByrinth Theater Company and has previously worked at Second Stage as well as Off-Broadway’s Public Theater. He was nominated for Chicago’s Jeff Award for his turn in “The Motherf***er with the Hat” at Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Perez joins a Broadway company that includes Stephen McKinley Henderson, Victor Almanzar, Elizabeth Canavan, Rosal Colón, Maria-Christina Oliveras and Common. Casting is by Telsey + Company.

This production of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ play, directed by Austin Pendleton, began previews on Dec. 1 and officially opened at the Hayes Theatre on Dec. 19. The production runs through Feb. 12.

“Between Riverside and Crazy” tells the story of a newly widowed father and his recently paroled son who fight to keep the last rent stabilized apartment on Riverside Drive — with old wounds and new characters who pop up along the way.

The Broadway engagement is produced under the leadership of Second Stage’s president and artistic director Carole Rothman and executive director Khady Kamara.
