After its best week since 2019, Broadway’s box office has tumbled.
Many productions that had a nine-performance week leading up to Jan. 1 resumed normal eight-performance schedules, which impacted grosses. Two productions, “A Strange Loop” and “Between Riverside and Crazy,” also canceled multiple performances last week.
For the week ending Jan. 8, the 32 productions running grossed $37,394,931, a 28% decrease from the previous week. Capacity was at 92%, up 0.17%.
Seventeen of 32 shows played to 95% capacity or greater, while only three played to less than 70% capacity.
The three top-grossing productions were “The Music Man,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Beetlejuice.”
In its final week on Broadway, “Beetlejuice” broke the eight-performance record at the Marquis Theatre, grossing $2,146,200. This marks the second consecutive week during which the production broke a house record. For the week ending Jan. 1, the musical broke the nine-performance box office record, earning $2,462,667.
“1776,” also during its final slate of performances on the Main Stem, saw its highest-grossing week. The revival earned $361,426, up 11%, and played to 90% capacity, up 7%.
“Funny Girl” broke another record at the August Wilson Theatre. The revival surpassed its previous highest-grossing week — when the production earned $2,005,697 for the week ending Dec. 28, 2022 — with its latest gross of $2,071,550.
Approaching the final week of its run, “Death of a Salesman” grossed $716,613, up 15%, and played to 90% capacity, up 0.37%. The production will end its limited engagement on Jan. 15.
Also coming up on its final week, after announcing a premature closing date of Jan. 15, is “Ohio State Murders.” The play grossed $361,242, up 16%, and played to 60% capacity, up 8%.
“Topdog/Underdog,” another production slated to end its run on Jan. 15, also saw significant box office increases. The production grossed $401,055, up 16%, and played to 73% capacity, up 20%.
“1776,” “Almost Famous,” “Beetlejuice” and “Into the Woods” closed on Jan. 8.
