In its last week of performances on Broadway, “Beetlejuice” is featuring understudies in the musical’s title role. Covers Will Blum and Elliott Mattox have been playing the undead demon since Christmas and will continue to do so until otherwise announced. “Beetlejuice” will close on Jan. 8, as previously announced.
Star Alex Brightman, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance, sustained a concussion during the musical’s Dec. 24 performance. The actor reported on Instagram that he “will be out of the show until I can get an ‘all clear’ from a doctor.’”
There is no update as to whether that “all clear” will come before “Beetlejuice” takes its final bow. A representative for the production said, “Alex is prioritizing his health right now and taking things day by day.”
The representative did not have information as to how Brightman’s injury occurred.
Both Blum and Mattox were a part of the original company when “Beetlejuice” first bowed at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2019. The pair returned for the production’s post-pandemic engagement, which began on April 8, 2022, at the Marquis Theatre.
“Beetlejuice” is produced on Broadway by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Langley Park Productions.
