Playwright and actor Jordan E. Cooper is launching a Save “Ain’t No Mo’” campaign after he received notice his new play will close on Dec. 18. As of closing, the production will have played 22 preview performances and 21 performances.

Cooper, the youngest Black American playwright in Broadway’s history, took to his personal Instagram page on Friday evening to share the news of the play’s “eviction notice.” In his post, he references how “The Wiz” received a closing notice on its opening night in 1974 but “audiences turned that around and it ended up running for four years.”

He continued in his post, “People are coming, loving the show and calling it the best theatrical experience of their life, but traditional Broadway marketing doesn’t work for this kind of show,” Cooper stated. “We need all hands on deck with urgency.”

“Ain’t No Mo’” began preview performances at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre on Nov. 9 and officially opened on Dec. 1.

The new comedy comes to Broadway following a 2019 run at The Public Theater. Through satirical vignettes, the play imagines a world in which the United States offers Black Americans a one-way ticket to Africa.

“Ain’t No Mo’ ” is produced on Broadway by Lee Daniels and Brian Anthony Moreland.
