“Once Upon a One More Time” is headed to Broadway. The new musical will begin previews on May 13 ahead of an official opening of June 22 at the Marquis Theatre. “Once Upon a One More Time” features a full score of songs made famous by Britney Spears.
With a book by Jon Hartmere, “Once Upon a One More Time” follows classic storybook characters and what happens in their lives when their book is closed. Princesses like Cinderella, Snow White and Little Mermaid meet for “scroll club” when a rogue fairy godmother drops a copy of “The Feminine Mystique” in their laps.
“Once Upon a One More Time” made its world premiere at Washington, D.C.’s Shakespeare Theatre Company in 2021.
The musical will be directed and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid, a married duo who were nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Choreography and Unique Theatrical Experience for their dance-theater piece “Beyond Babel.” The pair’s early work includes choreographing and appearing in music videos for Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber. Keone and Mari are also choreographing the in-development “Karate Kid” musical. “Once Upon a One More Time” will mark the Madrids’ Broadway debut.
The “Once Upon a One More Time” creative team also includes creative consultant David Leveaux, scenic designer Anna Fleischle, costume and hair designer Loren Elstein, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, sound designer Andrew Keister and projection designer Sven Ortel.
Many songs first performed by Spears can currently be heard on Broadway in the new musical “& Juliet.”
Casting for “Once Upon a One More Time” will be announced at a later date.
“Once Upon a One More Time” is being produced on Broadway by James L. Nederlander and Hunter Arnold.
The Marquis Theatre is currently home to “Beetlejuice,” which is set to close on Jan. 8.
