“The Mousetrap,” the world’s longest-running play, will debut on Broadway in 2023. Dates and theater will be announced.
Adapted from the Agatha Christie novel of the same name, the inaugural production premiered on November 25, 1952. “The Mousetrap” has played in London for 70 consecutive years with only a break for the COVID-19 shutdown.
A murder-mystery thriller, the play follows a group of seven strangers snowed in at a remote countryside lodge. When a cop arrives, they learn that a murderer is in their midst.
The Broadway mounting will be produced by “Mousetrap” U.K. producer Adam Spiegel and American producer Kevin McCollum. Spiegel previously produced the 1998 production of “Fame” on Broadway. McCollum has transferred two significant productions from London to Broadway in recent years: “The Play That Goes Wrong” in 2017, which continues to play off-Broadway at New World Stages, and “SIX,” which earned eight 2022 Tony Award nominations. McCollum also just announced that “Mrs. Doubtfire,” which opened on Broadway on December 5, 2021, will make its London transfer and begin performances in May of 2023 in the West End. McCollum is best known as the lead producer of Broadway’s “Rent,” “In the Heights” and “Avenue Q,” each of which earned the Tony Award for Best Musical.
“I am thrilled that Agatha Christie’s beloved murder mystery that changed popular theater and has been a landmark attraction for U.S. visitors to London’s West End for the past 70 years will now be coming to Broadway,” McCollum said in a statement. Spiegel added in a statement, “I feel after the longest out of town tryout in history, ‘The Mousetrap’ is finally ready to transfer to Broadway!”
The cast and creative team for Broadway have yet to be announced.
A U.K. touring production of “The Mousetrap” opened at Nottingham Theatre Royal in September 2022. The production also released a cartoon to commemorate the 70th anniversary.
