Producers of “The Kite Runner” have announced that Dramatic Publishing has acquired the licensing rights to the production and that plans are underway for a North American tour, slated to begin in 2024.
The limited Broadway engagement of “The Kite Runner,” which opened on July 21 at the Hayes Theater, will close as scheduled on Oct. 30, at which point the production will have played 17 previews and 117 regular performances.
Adapted by Matthew Spangler from the best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini, the Broadway run has been led by Amir Arison as Amir and Faran Tahir as Baba. The complete cast includes Mazin Akar, Barzin Akhavan, Demosthenes Chrysan, Azita Ghanizada, Danish Farooqui, Joe Joseph, Déa Julien, Beejan Land, Amir Malaklou, Christine Mirzayan, Haris Pervaiz, Alex Purcell, Eric Sirakian, Houshang Touzie and Evan Zes. Salar Nader plays the tabla, a percussion instrument.
Casting for the North American tour, as well as tour cities and dates, will be announced.
“The Kite Runner” is directed by Giles Croft and features scenic and costume design by Barney George, lighting design by Charles Balfour, sound design by Drew Baumohl, projection design by William Simpson, original music and music supervision by Jonathan Girling, movement direction by Kitty Winter and casting by Laura Stanczyk. Humaira Ghilzai is the cultural advisor and script consultant and Damian Sandys is the associate director.
Notably, a tour for “The Kite Runner” was planned ahead of the Hayes run and capitalized simultaneously with the Broadway production — a producing model different from the norm, as lead producers Broadway & Beyond explained to Broadway News.
“The Kite Runner” is produced by Victoria Lang, Ryan Bogner and Tracey McFarland of Broadway & Beyond Theatricals, Jayne Baron Sherman, Hunter Arnold, and in association with UK Productions Ltd. and Flying Entertainment Ltd/Kilimanjaro Group Ltd. Daryl Roth is the executive producer.
