Kristolyn Lloyd will assume the leading role of John Adams in the upcoming Broadway revival of “1776” beginning on Oct. 25.

Lloyd will replace the previously announced Crystal Lucas-Perry, who will play the role of John Adams during previews and until two weeks past opening night, through Oct. 23.

This gender-inclusive staging of “1776” is scheduled to begin previews on Sept. 16 and open on Oct. 6 at the American Airlines Theatre.

According to a press release, Lucas-Perry is departing “1776” early “for another project that has yet to be announced.”

Lloyd, who originated the role of Alana Beck in “Dear Evan Hansen,” has also been seen onstage in “Fairycakes,” “Little Women” and “Invisible Thread” (which was directed by “1776” co-helmer Diane Paulus).

This staging of “1776,” co-directed by Jeffrey L. Page with Paulus, recently concluded a summer run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Lucas-Perry played the role of John Adams during that engagement.

“1776” is produced by Roundabout Theatre Company, led by artistic director and CEO Todd Haimes. The revival is co-produced with the American Repertory Theater, led by artistic director Paulus and executive director Kelvin Dinkins, Jr.

“1776” is scheduled to play a limited Broadway engagement through Jan. 8, 2023.
