Carlinhos Brown will compose the score and Siedah Garrett will pen the lyrics for the new musical “Black Orpheus,” producers Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey announced Tuesday.
The new musical is planning a Broadway run in the 2023-2024 season. A developmental workshop is planned for the fall and an out-of-town tryout production will be produced in early 2023, according to the press release.
Nilo Cruz will write the musical’s book and Sergio Trujillo will direct the production. The musical, based on the 1956 play and its 1959 film adaptation, will also feature the bossa nova music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa and Vinicius de Moraes, which was included in the film.
Brown is a Latin Grammy Award-winning Brazilian recording artist, known for blending Brazilian percussive music with other genres, including reggae, funk and different latin styles of music. Garrett is a Grammy Award-winning musician, who is credited as a co-writer on the Michael Jackson song “Man in the Mirror.” Both artists were nominated for an Academy Award, alongside Sergio Mendes, in 2012 for their original song “Real in Rio.”
