John Earl Jelks will join the Broadway cast of “Birthday Candles,” starring alongside Debra Messing, Roundabout Theatre Company said Thursday.
Enrico Colantoni, Crystal Finn, Susannah Flood and Christopher Livingston will return to their previously announced roles. Jelks replaces Andre Braugher, who had been set to make his Broadway debut with the show in 2020.
“Birthday Candles” was originally scheduled to begin performances in April 2020, but has been delayed twice due to the pandemic.
Written by Noah Haidle and to be directed by Vivienne Benesch, “Birthday Candles” is now set to begin previews at the American Airlines Theatre on March 18 and open April 10. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through May 29.
Jelks is a Tony Award nominee for his role in August Wilson’s “Radio Golf,” and also appeared in “Sweat,” among other Broadway productions.
