A new musical based on the longest running film in Indian cinema is slated to come to Broadway next year.

The musical, entitled “Come Fall in Love — The DDLJ Musical,” is based on the film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.” The musical is slated to make its world premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in September 2022, before a Broadway during the 2022-2023 season.

The musical is produced by Yash Raj Films, the largest film studio in India and the producers behind the 1996 film. It features direction by Aditya Chopra, chairman of Yash Raj Films.

The new musical will feature choreography by Rob Ashford (“Thoroughly Modern Millie”), a book and lyrics by Nell Benjamin (“Mean Girls”) and music composed by Indian songwriters Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani.  The creative team will include set design by Derek McLane (“Moulin Rouge!”) and music supervision by Bill Sherman.

The movie tells the story of Simran, an Indian-American woman who has an impending arranged marriage in Indiana. However, Simran spends a summer in Europe and falls in love with an American man, putting those plans into question.

A global casting search will be headed by Duncan Stewart of Stewart/Whitley casting and Yash Raj Films casting head Shanoo Sharma.
