A petition to make the Apollo Theater a Broadway house garnered close to 16,000 signatures in the past week.
However, the petition, which has now closed, did not come from the Apollo Theater, according to a spokesperson for the organization. The theater did not have further comment on the petition at this time.
“This petition did not emanate from the Apollo,” said Fatima Jones, senior director of public relations at the Apollo Theater. “There is a lot going on in the world right now and we are all adjusting.”
Created under the name Broadway Fan, the petition cites the need for more people of color to hold positions of power on Broadway, including choosing programming, as well participating in the Tony nomination process and as part of the Broadway League. The Apollo Theater, which features dance, music, comedy and theater works on its stage, also meets the seating capacity required for Broadway theaters.
