A revival of “1776” is coming to Broadway in the spring of 2021.

The production will be directed by Diane Paulus and play the American Airlines Theatre. Before coming to Broadway, the production, co-produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company and American Repertory Theater, will play A.R.T. in Boston and a few other cities, including the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.

The revival is slated to play A.R.T. from May 22, 2020 through June 28. It will then head to the Ahmanson Theatre in July 2020.

“I have enormous respect for Diane Paulus and very much look forward to collaborating with her on ‘1776,’ which is an important part of Roundabout’s musical history on Broadway,” Todd Haimes, artistic director of Roundabout, said in the press release.

The last Broadway revival of “1776,” which features a score by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, was produced by Roundabout in 1996 and directed by Scott Ellis.

The musical originally opened on Broadway in 1969, starring William Daniels and Betty Buckley.
