Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon are returning to Broadway this spring in Terrence McNally’s “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.”

The revival will be directed by Arin Arbus, who is making her Broadway debut after serving as the associate art director of Theatre for a New Audience. It will begin previews in May 2019 for a 16-week engagement at one of the Shubert theaters.

The play will be produced by Hunter Arnold, Debbie Bisno and Tom Kirdahy.

McDonald, a six-time Tony Award winner, was recently seen on Broadway in “Shuffle Along” and “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.” Shannon, a two-time Academy Award nominee who was recently featured in “The Shape of Water,” last appeared on Broadway in the 2016 revival of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” and has numerous off-Broadway credits.

McNally’s two-person play centers on the beginnings of a possible romantic relationship between a waitress and a short-order cook.

The play originally premiered off-Broadway in 1987 with Kathy Bates and F. Murray Abraham. It was revived on Broadway in 2002, starring Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci.

The creative team includes set designer Riccardo Hernandez, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Nevin Steinberg and J. Jared Janas on hair, wig and makeup design.
