“The Band’s Visit” has recouped its $8.75 million capitalization after 11 months on Broadway, the producers announced Monday.
The musical won 10 Tony Awards last season, including Best Musical, and also benefited from rave reviews early in its run. It began previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Oct. 7, 2017 and opened on Nov. 9, 2017.
“We are deeply grateful to the artists, collaborators and colleagues who have worked with us tirelessly to bring ‘The Band’s Visit’ to Broadway,” producers Orin Wolf, John Styles and John Hart said in the press release. “It has brought us all such joy to see audiences connect with this story of strangers finding common ground through small acts of kindness.”
“The Band’s Visit” hit its highest gross, $1.56 million, in the week ended Dec. 31, 2017, along with the many other shows that gained a boost from the holiday week. For several months following the 2018 Tony Awards, the musical was grossing above its $1 million mark and above its gross potential of $1.02 million.
Amid the end-of-summer slump, grosses and attendance at “The Band’s Visit” have dropped off, but picked up again in the week ended Sept. 2, 2018, with the musical bringing in $938,572.
Based on an Israeli film, “The Band’s Visit” began off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater company before transferring to Broadway.
