Laura Benanti to take over Eliza Doolittle role in ‘My Fair Lady’

Laura Benanti will assume the role of Eliza Doolittle this fall as the current star, Lauren Ambrose, leaves to shoot a television show.

Benanti will take over the role beginning Oct. 23 and is currently scheduled through Feb. 17, 2019. Ambrose, who was Tony nominated for her portrayal, will play her final performance on Sun., Oct. 21. She will be leaving to film a thriller series directed by M. Night Shymalan.

Benanti, who has appeared in two previous Lincoln Center productions, was last on Broadway in last season’s “Meteor Shower.”

“Eliza Doolittle has been my dream role for as long as I can remember, so I couldn’t be more excited to join this brilliant company,” Benanti said. “Working with Bart and getting to be part of this show is a dream come true.”

Like Ambrose, Benanti will play the role seven times a week. Beginning October 30, Kerstin Anderson will play the role of Eliza at all Tuesday evening performances

“My Fair Lady” opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on April 19, 2018 and is directed by Bartlett Sher.
