Karen Olivo, Aaron Tveit, Danny Burstein to lead ‘Moulin Rouge’ musical

Karen Olivo, Aaron Tveit and Danny Burstein will star in the world premiere of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” at the Emerson Colonial Theatre.  Additional casting includes Sahr Ngaujah, Tam Mutu, Ricky Rojas and Robyn Hurder.

Karen Olivo, Aaron Tveit and Danny Burstein will star in the world premiere of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” at the Emerson Colonial Theatre.

Additional casting includes Sahr Ngaujah, Tam Mutu, Ricky Rojas and Robyn Hurder. Produced by Global Creatures, the musical will play the Boston theater from June 27 through August 5 in what it calls a “pre-Broadway” run.

Alex Timbers will direct the musical, which features a book by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine.

Details of a New York run will be released at a later date, according to the press release.

Set in the early 1900s in Paris, Tveit will play the role of Christian, a writer, who encounters singer Satine, played by Olivo, at the Moulin Rouge. Burstein plays Harold Zidler, host of the Moulin Rouge.

The musical includes songs from the Baz Luhrmann movie as well as other popular music released since the movie was released in 2001.

The musical’s design team includes Derek McLane as set designer, costumes by Catherine Zuber and lighting by Justin Townsend.

Bill Damaschke is the executive producer of the musical.
