Tony Award nominee Jeannette Bayardelle will temporarily take over the role of Angélique in Broadway’s “& Juliet.” Bayardelle will begin performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on June 29. She will temporarily replace Charity Angél Dawson, who will take a leave of absence from the production.

Bayardelle received a 2022 Tony nomination for her featured turn as Mrs. Neilsen in “Girl from the North Country.” Previously, she appeared on the Main Stem as Dionne in the 2009 revival of “Hair” and Celie in 2005’s “The Color Purple.” Her regional credits include “Gun and Powder” at Paper Mill Playhouse and “The Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical” at La Jolla Playhouse.

Featuring a Tony Award-nominated book by David West Read set to the soundscape of Max Martin pop songs, “& Juliet” reimagines an ending of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” in which the titular heroine survives and embarks on a journey of female empowerment. The production opened on Nov. 17, 2022, and received nine 2023 Tony nominations, including a nod for Best Musical.

The current principal cast of “& Juliet” also includes Maya Boyd as Juliet, David Bedella as Lance, Betsy Wolfe as Anne Hathaway, Austin Scott as Shakespeare, Justin David Sullivan as May, Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo and Philippe Arroyo as Francois. Casting is by Stephen Kopel and Carrie Gardner.

A return date for Dawson will be announced.

“& Juliet” is produced by Max Martin, Tim Headington, Theresa Steele Page, Jenny Petersson, Martin Dodd and Eva Price.
