‘Lempicka’ to conclude Broadway run

The new musical opened on April 14 at the Longacre Theatre.

The new musical “Lempicka” has announced a closing date of May 19.  “Lempicka” began previews on March 19 and officially opened on April 14 at the Longacre Theatre. Upon closing, the musical will have played 27 previews and 41 performances.

Featuring a book by Matt Gould and Carson Kreitzer, music by Gould and lyrics by Kreitzer, “Lempicka” chronicles the life, art, politics and sexuality of Polish art-deco painter Tamara de Lempicka. The musical is directed by Rachel Chavkin and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly. Prior to its Broadway premiere, “Lempicka” was mounted at Williamstown Theatre Festival and La Jolla Playhouse.

Leading the cast are Eden Espinosa in the titular role, Amber Iman as her muse and lover Rafaela and Andrew Samonsky as her husband Tadeusz Lempicki. Also  featured in the company are George Abud as Marinetti, Natalie Joy Johnson as Suzy Solidor, Zoe Glick as Kizette, Nathaniel Stampley as the Baron and Beth Leavel as the Baroness. Rounding out the cast are ensemble members Alex Aquilino, Lauren Blackman, Stephen Brower, Kyle Brown, Holli’ Conway, Abby Matsusaka, Jimin Moon, Khori Michelle Petinaud, Ximone Rose and Nicholas Ward. Veronica Fiaoni, Michael Milkanin, Mary Page Nance and Julio Rey serve as swings, while Mariand Torres is the standby for Tamara de Lempicka and the Baroness.

“Lempicka” features music direction by Charity Wicks, music supervision by Remy Kurs and orchestrations by Cian McCarthy. The production’s creative team includes scenic designer Riccardo Hernández, costume designer Paloma Young, lighting designer Bradley King, sound designers Justin Stasiw and Peter Hylenski, projection designer Peter Nigrini, hair and wig designer Mia Neal. Peter Duchan provides creative consulting and Cody Renard Richard is production stage manager.

“Lempicka” was nominated for three 2024 Tony Awards. Espinosa and Iman were nominated for their lead and featured performances, respectively, and Hernández and Nigrini shared a nod for Best Scenic Design of a Musical.

Prior to its Broadway bow, the company of “Lempicka” performed at Sotheby’s auction house, which presented “The World of Tamara,” a special exhibit of Lempicka’s artwork from March 28 through April 18. Lempicka’s art deco portraits were additionally displayed on the theater’s facade and marquee.

An original cast album was recorded and will be available digitally on May 29, with a CD release date of July 5.
